NELC Bit Error Rate (BER) Monitor Unit: Description, Operation, and Maintenance.

Abstract

This document provides detailed information necessary to the application and maintenance of the NELC Bit Error Rate (BER) Monitor Unit and its associated recorder which together make up a link monitoring kit. The BER Monitor Unit provides a transmit code generator for sourcing equipment or link and a receive monitor which automatically bit-and code-locks to the received data stream and compares input against its reference code generator to determine number of errors introduced in link. The unit provides a choice of rates, samples, sizes, and interfaces. It outputs error count in real time on LED display and permanently on paper tape. The arrangement allows time-correlating of results from different receive sites after the test has been completed. (Author)
