Graphite Fibers from Pitch.
Abstract
Several commercial pitches and one synthetic pitch are evaluated as possible precursors for modified, spinnable pitches. A COMMERCIAL PETROLEUM PITCH WITH 120 C S.P. and less than 0.5 percent Q.I. is selected as the most promising starting material for further work. The rheology of modified pitches is extensively investigated. Monofilaments with diameters ranging from 50 microns down to 10 microns are spun continuously. A range of thermosetting and carbon-izing conditions is explored. It is concluded that the processing of multifilament yarn continuously through a series of heat-treatment stages is feasible.
