New Polymer-Forming Reactions for Fluorocarbons.

Abstract

The synthesis and reaction of selected perfluorocompounds containing perfluoroolefinic (-CF=CF2) and fluoroxy (- OF) functional groups adaptable to polymerization reactions are studied. The background and theoretical considerations of utilizing the addition reactions between fluoroxy and unsaturated fluorocarbon bonds as new polymer-forming reactions are dis- cussed. Facile and quantitative addition reactions between -CF=CF2 and -OF bonds are demonstrated. The predominant addition of perfluoro-tert-butoxy group of perfluoro- tert-butylhypofluorite to the terminal perfluoro-olefinic carbon was identified as an important factor for desirable polymer- forming reactions.
