An Investigation of Nonverbal Communication.

Abstract

The subject addressed is nonverbal communication, it evolvement into a new scientific study called kinesics, and its relationship to the spoken word. Data was gathered through literary research. This posed a problem inasmuch as kinesics is a new field and relatively little has been written on the subject. By example it is shown how body language relates to some of the various professions such as law, politics, teaching, psychiatry, and the media. This is not to say that these are the only professions where kinesics is important. Rather it is an attempt to show that this new science touches all walks of life. Indeed everyone is constantly involved in nonverbal communications. This investigation concludes that the body does not know how to lie. All movement, all gestures and expressions, whether natural or practiced, have meaning and will either reinforce or belie the spoken word. (Author)
