Product Improvement of the Delay Plunger for the M572E2 PD Fuze.

Abstract

This report covers the design, development, and testing of the Auto-Delay Assembly. This item is used to provide the on-target delay and graze functioning modes for the M572E2 Point Detonating Artillery Fuze. The report describes the evolution from a Picatinny Arsenal originated concept to analytical model studies, through the component experimentation stages to hardware fabrication and testing. The testing included static propagation series, environmental programs, and finally, ballistic firings in a number of artillery pieces. The culmination of the effort was the fabrication of a large quantity of Assemblies for ET/ST testing aimed at type classification for service use. Volume II of this report traces the design, development, and testing of a Pyrotechnic version of the Auto-Delay that was pursued up to the point of limited ballistic firings. Work at this point was suspended in favor of the present all mechanical design. (Author)
