Silicon Intensifier Vidicon with Anti-Blooming Target.

Abstract

Reduction in blooming in SIT camera tubes, the objective of the contract, centered about improvements in the structure of the silicon targets. This was accomplished by utilizing the Non-linear Structured Sink technique, a method of forming a structure in the target which is passive during normal operation, but soaks up the excess holes when the signal diodes are overloaded. In the course of the contract work, a diagnostic SIT tube was constructed to isolate various blooming sources, and photographic evidence is presented of blooming effects when various combinations of a lens and fiber optic are used. The evidence shows that the fiber optics has a larger contribution to tube blooming than the non-blooming target. The final prototype (RCA C21130C) exhibited greatly improved blooming characteristics, compared to previous SIT tubes. Presented in appendices are brief technical discussions of beam-scanned silicon targets and SIT camera tube operation. (Author)
