Analytic Mathematical Models of Tactical Military Communications Channels.

Abstract

The progress reported in this report relates to three areas of investigation. (1) The first area relates to the Markov gap model. The tail end of the unconditional and conditional gap distributions are extended to lengths which actually occurred on the channel. Parameters of the gap model were determined and the computer program which generates error sequences using the model has been modified. (2) Diffuse codes and Gallager codes were simulated. Performance of these codes was evaluated both on the troposcatter channel and the VHF channel. The results show that the improvement is, in general, within one order of magnitude. (3) Performance of product codes has been investigated. In comparison with the shortened BCH code with the same code length, the results show that the product code has a lower information rate.
