Investigation of a Multibeam FLIR Display System.
Abstract
This report summarizes the results of a one year research and development effort to design, fabricate, test and demonstrate the performance of a compact 160 X 256 resolution element multibeam FLIR display system. The display system (DIGISPLAY) was designed with 40 simultaneous writing electron beams so as to be directly compatible with the AVCO Night Sensor FLIR scanner, which utilizes 40 I.R. sensors, without the utilization of multiplexing circuitry as is required by conventional CRT systems. The DIGISPLAY system was fabricated and successfully demonstrated with the AVCO Night Sensor FLIR scanner. The display provided stable FLIR imagery when operated with the video input signals from the multi element I.R. scanner and fulfilled most of the design goal that were established for the system. The DIGISPLAY provided a highlight screen brightness of 51 foot lamberts and 8 shades of gray scale (square root of 2 per step) which were obtained by means of pulse width modulation circuitry. Performance measurements were obtained from the operating system including such parameters as brightness, contrast, screen uniformity, gray scale performance and power consumption. (Author)
