Solar Videometer: An Automatic Solar Flare Identification and Classification System.

Abstract

The effect of solar flares upon radio communication on earth has been established, and is one of the chief reasons for interest in solar-geophysical phenomena. Voluminous data have been laboriously collected and analyzed, but the existence of discrepancies among observations made to date indicates a need for more facile data acquisition and more objective techniques of classification. The project reported here achieves these objectives via the development of a digital videometer system with computer control of acquisition and analysis. The system brings real-time prediction capability within reach for the first time. (Author)
