Recent Experiments Exploring the Properties of F-Region Irregularities That Give Rise to 'Spread F' and Scintillations.

Abstract

The current state of knowledge of the F-region irregularity phenomenon is determined. In particular, the results of recent experiments are summarized: (1) two in-situ satellite probes that determine the magnitudes, locations, and extents of the irregularity regions; (2) ground-based vhf radar explorations that confirm the turbulent structure of the regions; and (3) long-term monitorings of geostationary satellite beacons which reveal gross drift properties and the dependence on solar activity.
