A Survey of Speech Understanding Systems Technology.

Abstract

Discrete words speech understanding systems are now on the market, and within 2 years laboratory models of continuous speech systems with a 500-word vocabulary will be in use for data management and control systems. Design of continuous speech understanding systems is based on a mixture of direct speech processing and hypothesizing possibilities. Presently, eleven major activities are engaged in the design and development of speech understanding systems. Since all presently conceived systems are task domain bounded, future efforts will be aimed at expanding these boundaries. Within 15 years unlimited discourse speech understanding systems will be feasible. In order for the Marine Corps to make effective use of speech understanding systems, task domain specifications will have to be developed within 2 years. Miniaturization of the front end of speech understanding systems will be important in Marine Corps applications. (Author)
