Biodegradation of Benzene.
Abstract
Two species of bacteria capable of degrading the aromatic hydrocarbon benzene in vivo have been isolated from soil samples that were obtained from areas which had been drenched with kerosene (JP-4), gasoline, and diesel fuel for several years. It was reasoned that any bacteria that could be obtained from these samples were either using the fuel as a source of carbon or were at least tolerating the fuel. One of the microorganisms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is capable of degrading benzene in both the liquid and the vapor phases. The other, a species of Bacillus, also showed growth potential in the presence of benzene but produced only an approximately 50% breakdown of benzene as compared to the 96% breakdown produced by P. aeruginosa under similar conditions.
