Polyarylsulfone Resins as New, Thermally Stable Transparent Plastics for Aircraft Enclosures.

Abstract

Four candidate polymers, Polymers A, A', C AND D, of the family of plastics known as polyarylsulfones are molded into flat sheets and evaluated for optical, mechanical and other key transparency properties. The target luminous transmittance of 85 percent and haze of 3 percent on a 1/4 inch sheet is achieved with Polymer A. Average values of 70-75 percent luminous transmittance and 5- 10 percent haze are obtained with Polymer C. Polymer A', a new polymer similar to Polymer A but with improved mechanical properties, is introduced late in the program. (Author-PL)
