Structural Impact Test Comparing Misch Metal, Magnesium Alloy AZ31B, and Magnesium/Aluminum Cylindrical Cases at Low Velocities Using Air Gun Techniques.

Abstract

Structural impact data were obtained for three different materials, misch metal, magnesium alloy AZ31B, and magnesium/aluninum, by launching cylindrical cases from a low pressure air gun. The tests were conducted to examine the breakup of the test items when impacted at varying impact angles against an impenetrable steel plate. The air gun was used as an economical means of simulating air drops. The cases were designed to simulate a possible prototype design for an incendiary bomblet and were filled with tightly packed sand to approximate the fuel density. The cases in one set were allowed to tumble and thereby impact at random angles. The cases in a second set were fitted with trip ring nose sections and tail fin sections to provide aerodynamic stability and ensure a nose-on impact. (Author)
