Report on Total Energy Feasibility Criteria.

Abstract

The purpose of this work was to establish design feasibility guidelines for the use of total energy systems for nominal power sizes, of 1, 10, and 50 MWE. The design options available are examined in order to establish concepts offering environmentally and economically improved methods of obtaining utilities. Conceptual designs were performed on diesel, gas turbine and steam turbine powered total energy systems of various sizes. Analysis of the effects of Capital costs, energy requirements, and effects of energy cost of Total Energy systems were performed and compared with conventional methods of obtaining utilities. The potential operating cost reduction of utilizing the waste heat from a high temperature gas cooled nuclear reactor in conjunction with a closed cycle helium gas turbine were discussed and trends plotted.
