Smoke/Flame Pyrotechnic Marker Compositions

Abstract

This report summarizes the work accomplished in the development of castable smoke/flame pyrotechnic compositions applicable to a wide variety of markers ranging from the 2.75-inch FFAR to the 4.87-inch LUU-1/B target marker. As a result of this investigation, three color combinations were selected for further development. They included red flame-white smoke, red flame-red smoke, and yellow flame-orange smoke compositions. With a view to an end-item product, the development program included a series of environmental and visibility tests for overall composition evaluation. The development of the red-white and yellow- orange compositions was successful, and these compositions show every indication of satisfying all the requirements of an operational smoke/flame marker system. Unfortunately the red-red combination proved to be a more difficult problem, and although some promising approaches were generated, additional composition development is required to meet the ultimate marker objectives.
