Study of a Sidelobe Interference Reduction Method for Radar Systems. Part I. Analysis and Result of 1 and 2 Dimensional Taylor Patterns Cancellation.
Abstract
A new method is described for reducing radar interference due to coherent target returns arriving from sidelobe directions. The method, applicable to phased array systems, is based upon use of two transmission patterns on alternate transmissions. One pattern, the 'specified' pattern P(u), is arbitrary while the second, the realized pattern Pr(u), has ideally the same main-lobe but the negative of the sidelobes of P(u). By averaging a number of transmissions the sidelobe interference is reduced while mainlobe returns are unaffected. Examples of realized patterns Pr(u) are given based upon both Taylor line source and Taylor circularly symmetric specified patterns. Continuing analysis will investigate the new force-point synthesis technique used to achieve the realized pattern. Various classes of aperture geometries and illumination functions will be studied.
