SST Technology Follow-on Program - Phase II. Development and Evaluation of the Aluminum-brazed Titanium System. Volume V. Structural Verification.

Abstract

The objective of the test program, described in this report, is to verify structural adequacy of aluminum-brazed titanium honeycomb sandwich panels from SST prototype designs and newly developed parts made possible by advancements in the braze process technology. Joint designs, developed during this program, are shown to be capable of developing the full strength of panels. Panels, suitable for use as surfaces of wing or empennage, are proven for required load ranges and panel resistance to sonic fatigue is demonstrated. Wedge-shape panels, in the form of 737 flight spoilers, have been designed, tested, certified as flightworthy, and are now undergoing flight service evaluation. Recommendations for further development are defined. (Author)
