SST Technology Follow - on Program - Phase II. Transient Excitation Techniques for Wind Tunnel and Flight Flutter Testing of SST Configurations.

Abstract

The application of transient forms of excitation combined with Fourier transformation techniques has been investigated during a model flutter test. The subcritical response of the model subjected to three forms of excitation: steady state sinusoid, pseudo random noise, and fast sinusoidal sweep was measured and compared to analysis. The use of transient excitation led to potential reductions in flight test time of at least 33%, but development of software to evaluate transformed data appears necessary for further improvement. The methods investigated appear to be a valid alternate to classical methods of flight flutter testing. (Author)
