The Effect of Conical Boattails on the Magnus Characteristics of Projectiles at Subsonic and Transonic Speeds.

Abstract

Wind tunnel tests were conducted on the Army-Navy Spinner Rocket at subsonic and transonic speeds to determine the influence of boattail configuration on the aerodynamic characteristics of projectile shapes. The boattail configurations consisted of a square base, 1/2- and 1-caliber, 7 degree conical boattails, and an in-caliber fin boattail. Data were obtained on the 5- and 7- caliber configurations at Mach 0.26 and from Mach 0.8 to 1.02. Data were also obtained on the 4- and 6-caliber models at Mach 0.26.
