Improved Shipboard Greases, Horizontal Shaft Investigation.

Abstract

A late technology grease (now qualified under specification MIL-G-81322A) was evaluated for long service life in size 315 ball bearings in an apparatus simulating severe service in horizontal shaft Navy shipboard motors. The grease gave an indicated G-10 life (the life 90% of bearings would be expected to exceed without lubrication failure) of over 11,000 hours. The corresponding life for a MIL-G-18709A grease was 3,997 hours and for a MIL-G-24139 grease was 4,228 hours under the same conditions. (Author)
