Prototype 'Star Buoys' Designed for High Radar Response and Resistance to Ice Damage.

Abstract

These buoys are the first of this type to have been tested by the Coast Guard. The results of these tests show this type to be superior to the standard unlighted third class buoys as regards radar response. However, the response is not equal to that of the XRA buoys which have been previously tested by this unit. As a result of this test, certain design changes in this type of buoy are recommended. It is believed that these changes will result in better radar response for the 'Star' type buoys. It is recommended that these changes be effected and additional tests be made. (Author)
