Acceptable Limits of Rotating Band Damage for 5 Inch Projectiles

Abstract

Twenty 5-in./54 MARK 64 Mod 0 projectiles with various degrees of rotating band damage were ballistic tested. A control group with no rotating band damage was tested along with several other groups with nicks, scratches, and gouges in the rotating bands. None of the groups gave ballistic results (velocity or range) significantly different from the control group or each other. Photographs show acceptable levels of rotating band damage with respect to ballistic performance.
