Small-scale nuclear reactors for remote military operations: opportunities and challenges

Abstract

This presentation will provide an overview of the military's initiatives to develop small terrestrial reactors since the 1950s, with a focus on recent and ongoing studies to assess the feasibility of reactors for either critical installations or remote bases. Additionally, I will discuss examples of military base energy demand, technology development, and policy considerations that impact the attractiveness of developing small reactors for terrestrial military applications.
