Demonstration of Combined Food and Landscape Waste Composting at Fort Leonard Wood, MO: Fort Leonard Wood Installation Strategic Sustainable Plan
Abstract
While nearly 90% of landscape wastes are recovered and processed into soil amendments and organic fertilizers using simple composting technologies, less than 3% of food wastes are recovered and recycled and the remainder are landfilled at considerable cost. Executive Order 13101 calls for the Department of Defense to incorporate waste prevention and recycling into their daily operations. Although most Army installations have effective landscape waste collection and recycling capabilities, they capture very little food waste for recycling. To initiate the incorporation of organic waste treat-ment technologies into daily activities at Army installations, this work investigated the logistical and economic feasibility of this technology and demonstrated food waste composting at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.
