Mid-wave IR Signatures of CFAV Quest in the North Atlantic Summer and Winter Climates

Abstract

We compare the measured and modeled mid-wave infrared signature of CFAV Quest and the maritime background during two trials Q276 and Q280. Both trials were conducted near Halifax harbour in the North Atlantic. The prevailing environmental conditions for trial Q276 were typical of North Atlantic summer (August 2003) whereas trial Q280 was carried out in a North Atlantic winter climate (February 2004). From infrared images of Quest and the maritime background, we obtain the ship, sky and sea radiances. Using the relevant environmental descriptions and an accurate geometry of Quest, we model in ShipIR the corresponding radiances. Our results show that the absolute radiances of the sea and sky background are strongly dependent on the climate and while the absolute values differ between the measurement and model predictions, the trends are consistent. There is a 2040% difference in the mid-wave IR radiances of Quest between measurement and modeling. The data shows that the stack of Quest has a strongly variable radiance in the winter suggesting that it poses a great vulnerability for the ship being detected.
