The Application of Human Factors Engineering in CF CCIS Projects

Abstract

The importance of Integrating Human Factors Engineering with the development of Command, Control and Information Systems (CCIS) is discussed. It is recommended that a user-centered approach be taken to the development of such systems. The essential features of four software development approaches were reviewed. It was concluded that current approaches do not facilitate taking a user-centered approach, but new software system design methods provide may do so. The essential features of user-centered approach are outlined, and the contribution of photocopying is reviewed. An existing Human Engineering Programme Plan, US MIL-STD-46855B, is modified to provide the basis for a plan for a user-centered approach in CCIS.
