Report of the Defense Science Board Task Group on Independent Research and Development

Abstract

The Director of Defense Research and Engineering, Dr. Foster, has requested the Defense Science Board (DSB) to undertake a study of the technical management aspects of Independent Research and Development (IR and D). A number of specific areas for study have been established. One of these is to "Develop meaningful lists of examples of the output of defense contractors' IR and D efforts that are beneficial to the DoD and suggest a simple means of keeping such a list current." In order to respond to this phase of the study, the DSB Task Group established to make this study identified a number of companies with active IR and D programs who would most likely be willing and able to quickly respond to a request for assistance in this area. This report is a compilation of their responses. Companies included are: The Boeing Company, Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, Raytheon Company, Litton Industries, Inc., Honeywell Inc., Texas Instruments Incorporated, Sylvania Electric Products, Inc., Motorola Inc., United Aircraft Corporation, Aerojet-General Corporation, Hercules Incorporated, Hazeltine Corporation, The Garrett Corporation, AVCO Everett Research Laboratory, and Radio Corporation of America.
