The Effect of Inspired Oxygen Concentration and Transportation Time on Arterial Hemoglobin Oxygen Saturation During Transport from the Operating Room to the Postanesthesia Care UnitCare Unit
Abstract
Early postoperative hypoxemia as a postanestheticcomplication often appears at the end of an operation and maylinger through the first postoperative hours. This hypoxemia isoften due to reduced functional residual capacity (FRC),hypoventilation, and ventilation-perfusion mismatch. Earlypostoperative hypoxemia leads to cellular ischemia which may delayrecovery or lead to organ dysfunction and increased morbidity andmortality. In addition, posthyperventilation hypoventilation andthe persistence of ventilatory depression produced by anestheticsand neuromuscular blocking drugs may aggravate hypoxemia. Theavailability of pulse oximetry has made it possible to makecontinuous measurements of arterial oxygen saturation (Sa02)intraoperatively and postoperatively. Oxygen saturation maydecrease during transport from the operating room to thepostanesthesia care unit (PACU). The purpose of this study was toassess the degree of blood oxygenation during transport to thePACU with and without supplemental oxygen.
