Abstract

This compendium is part of a series that represents the best efforts of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory(ARL). Each volume contains previously published peer-reviewed journal articles in a particular area. This volume highlights recent contributions in light-based technology being made by ARL researchers. In recognition of the central role light plays in our lives, the UN General Assembly 68th Session dedicated the year 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). As part of that celebration, ARL considered the role that science and application of light has had in national defense. Significantly, ARL's predecessor organizations developed technologies in the1950s and 1960s that allow us to see in the dark, giving the U.S. military a strategic warfighting advantage. The legacy of this work is evident in ARL's on-going contributions to infrared photodetection. At its most fundamental level, light delivers energy from one place to another. If this energy is encoded in some fashion, light carries information and, as an information carrier, light can be used either to sense or to communicate. This volume presents papers in all of these areas: the generation of light energy; the detection of light energy; the use of light to measure and sense; the use of light to communicate.
