Efficacy of Laser Fluorescence in Dental Caries Diagnosis: A Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Introduction: The ability to accurately diagnose the presence or absence of dental caries is of the utmost importance since errors may lead to either performance of irreversible, but unnecessary, dental procedures, or failure to provide needed treatment. Conventional caries detection methods (visual/tactile/radiographic) rely on subjective judgment and are prone to misinterpretation. To improve accuracy, several adjunctive diagnostic instruments are available. Of these, laser fluorescence has received the most attention. However, a majority of studies possess shortcomings in methodology that limit their value. As a result, the plethora of conflicting reports in the scientific literature renders it difficult for practitioners to make confident, informed decisions regarding the effectiveness of these instruments. Objective: This meta-analysis sought to evaluate the effectiveness (sensitivity and specificity) of laser fluorescence, as compared to other diagnostic methods(visual/tactile examination; bitewing radiographs; fiber-optic transillumination) in the detection of dental caries.
