Biopolymer Processing Using Ionic Liquids

Abstract

The proposed research will investigate the utilization of ionic liquids (IL's) as solvents and catalysts for the dissolution and degradation of chitin and chitosan. This project will:1) synthesis various IL catalysts to study their effects on depolymerization of chitin and chitosan, 2) synthesis a variety of IL's to investigate the effects of dissolution solvents on the rate of reaction and degradation products of the conversion of chitin and chitosan, and 3) investigate the effects of various reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature, and catalyst loading, on the reaction rate and degradation products from the depolymerization of chitin and chitosan.
