ADP Regulates the Structure and Function of the Protein KaiC

Abstract

Under this grant, the LiWang lab investigated the molecular mechanism of the circadian clock of cyanobacteria. They are the only organisms thus far whose clock can be reconstituted ina test tube without the complex milieu of living cells (Nakajima et al., 2005). The LiWang lab exploited this in vitro clock system to gain an atomic-resolution understanding of a circadian clock. The rationale is that fundamental principles of timekeeping are shared among diverse lifeforms (just like all aircraft share basic principles of flight).
