2015 Chemical-Agent Simulants Workshop Report

Abstract

Very limited data exists in the conditions of interest (high temperatures, high heating rates) for simulating weapon defeat of targets containing chemical agent. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is attempting to address this gap by funding basic research in this area. The purpose of the workshop was to identify and decide on a set of chemical simulants that would be most suitable for studying the reactivity and kinetics of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) under extreme temperature and heating rate conditions within a postblast fireball. The expectations were to identify three to five simulants per chemical agent of interest, so as to focus basic research investigations.
