After the Dust Settles: The Role of the US Military in Reconstruction Operations

Abstract

This thesis examines the US militarys role in reconstruction operations and proposes a better approach than that currently being executed. It compares and assesses US reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War, World War II in Japan, and the Iraq War. These studies reveal several factors that relate to operational success and failure. Focus upon these factors can improve the success rate of US-led reconstruction efforts in the future.
