Coherence of the Geomagnetic Field and Implications for Noise Reduction Using Mesospheric Magnetometry

Abstract

ONR Code 321 funded FASORtronics LLC to demonstrate the ability to measure high-altitude magnetic fields using ground-based laser-excitation of Sodium ions in the ionosphere (contract N00014-14-C-0110). The aim of the project was to determine if the magnetic field variations measured at high-altitude can be used for geomagnetic noise cancellation in airborne magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) systems. Aeromagnetics Solutions Incorporated was awarded NICOPN62909-15-1-2054 to assist with the experimental setup, determine the coherence between the groundstation measurements, and evaluate several geomagnetic noise reduction algorithms. This report describes this work.
