Its Not a Big Truck: Examining Cyber Metaphors

Abstract

Former Senator Ted Stevens became the butt of many late night talk show jokes and achieved YouTube immortality in June of 2006 when he said the Internet is not a big truck. Its a series of tubes. Along with inadvertently creating a new Internet meme [a catchphrase or idea that spreads online], the senators unfortunate attempt to explain the Internet highlights both the central role of metaphor in human understanding and the confusion surrounding this global collection of interconnected computers.
