B-52 Transformation Challenge: Maintaining Conventional Relevancy in a Nuclear-Focused Major Command

Abstract

In the wake of significant high-visibility errors related to nuclear weapons, Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) was formed to oversee the B-52 and B-2 bomber missions as well as the intercontinental ballistic missile force. The Air Forces goal in this reorganization is to reinvigorate the nuclear enterprise and streamline the command and control of nuclear assets. AFGSC is well postured to steward the B-52s nuclear mission. However, AFGSCs dominant nuclear focus poses risk to the B-52s future efficacy as a conventional platform.
