Robust Technology to Augment or Replace the US Reliance on the Global Positioning System

Abstract

Precision has become an all important force multiplier in the employment of US forces, and this employment has become routine. Precision has allowed US forces, specifically Air and Space forces, to provide global capabilities across the spectrum between lethal and non-lethal engagements. The inherent flexibility and versatility of air and space power allows the exploitation of mass and maneuver through synchronization of action. Mass is one of the foundations of US Joint warfighting capabilities allowing US forces the ability choose the time and place to concentrate effects against an adversary. Additionally, maneuver places the adversary at a disadvantage to the Joint force capabilities. The advent of the Global Positioning System (GPS) provided a monumental leap in precision for US and allied forces providing data for very accurate position, navigation, and timing (PNT).
