CVN 78 Gerald R. Ford Class Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN 78)

Abstract

The CVN 78 Gerald R. Ford Class Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN 78) is the planned successor to the NIMITZ-class (CVN 68) aircraft carrier. The CVN 78 mission is to provide credible, sustainable, independent forward presence during peacetime without access to land bases; operate as the cornerstone of a joint and/or allied maritime expeditionary force in response to crisis; and carry the war to the enemy through joint multi-mission offensive operations by: (a) being able to operate andsupport aircraft in attacks on enemy forces ashore, afloat, or submerged independent of forward-based land facilities, (b) protecting friendly forces from enemy attack through the establishment and maintenance of battle space dominance independent of forward-based land facilities, and (c) engaging in sustained operations in support of the United States and its allies independent of forward-based land facilities.
