Reevaluating American Grand Strategy in an Era of Retrenchment

Abstract

Throughout the course of the last decade, the United States has experienced a slow decline both economically and politically. Conflicts in Southern Asia have overstretched the U.S. military in a time of declining economic prosperity. As rising regional powers emerge to challenge the status quo, Americas global interests must be reexamined in order to establish a realistic grand strategy for the next century. In order to thwart a rapid decline, defend its critical interests, and prevent potential conflict, the United States must enter a period of retrenchment. International commitments, military obligations, and existing alliances should be scrutinized in light of limited economic resources and declining prestige. This paper will review U.S. grand strategy and delineate realistic and palatable retrenchment options for the 21st century.
