Strain Imaging Using Terahertz Waves and Metamaterials

Abstract

Results are presented of an experimental polarimetric technique to measure strain in opaque objects. Experiments were conducted utilizing metamaterials on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sheets to produce strain-induced birefringence at terahertz frequencies. Preliminary measurements are encouraging and show a qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions.
