Endobronchial Photoacoustic Microscopy for Staging of Lung Cancer

Abstract

This research is aimed at developing a new endoscopic imaging approach, called photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), for lung cancer staging. The project will develop imaging hardware and conduct phantom experiments to achieve the proposed goals. We have fulfilled the statement of work proposed. In Year 1, we characterized and optimized the proposed liquid acoustic lens for tunable photoacoustic imaging; we designed and optimized the housing of the endoscope, and conducted some initial phantom experiments to test/validate the constructed photoacoustic endoscope. In Year 2 (no-cost-extension year), we continued to optimize the endoscope and conduct more phantom experiments, and produced the prototype endoscopic PAM system. We analyzed the images from the phantom experiments and wrote the final report.
