Diagnosis of Late-Stage, Early-Onset, Small-Fiber Polyneuropathy

Abstract

Gulf War Veterans report chronic multi-symptoms similar to that found in the treatable nerve disease small-fiber polyneuropathy (SFPN). Dr. Oaklanders preliminary evidence showed 47% of Gulf War Veterans had results consistent with SFPN. Evaluation for SFPN is expensive and lengthy. The aim of this research is to 1) develop screening tools for simple diagnosis by using patient-report symptom questionnaire and standardized medical exams, 2) develop biotechnology tools for simple diagnosis (sweat testing and pupilometry), 3) identify gene polymorphisms to detect risk for SFPN.
