Organizational Dysfunction in the US Air Force: Lessons from the ICBM Community

Abstract

This study aimed to prove the validity of an organizational design model by applying it to identify organizational factors contributing to the 2013-2014 cheating scandal in the United States Air Force intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) crewmember community. First, the study introduces the problem and explains organizational dysfunction. The central question is, What insight does an organizational design model of analysis offer to help minimize future organizational dysfunction in the United States Air Force? This study defines organizational dysfunction as a myopic focus on the mission while exhibiting deviant behaviors contrary to stated values. Next, the study proposes a model of organizational analysis as a lens through which to view the ICBM organization.
