The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation: A Tenable Provider of Security in Post-2014 Central Asia

Abstract

This article considers whether, and to what degree, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) can serve as a security provider in post-2014 Central Asia. The article accomplishes this by contrasting the SCOs strengths and weaknesses against potential (and probable) insecurity in the Central Asian region following the International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) planned withdrawal of the majority of its troops by the end of 2014. The article concludes with policy suggestions for the SCOs further development that could augment its weaknesses and make the organisation a more formidable security actor.
