Turkey's Rising Influence and Increasing Political Boldness: Implications for Its Relationship with NATO

Abstract

Turkey has historically been a political outlier among its NATO allies. Despite these differences, Turkey has managed to maintain a strong bond with NATO. But recent actions by Turkey have caused increasing levels of consternation within the alliance. This paper examines the causes of this recent tension, its implications for NATO leaders, and actions that can be taken to ensure the future cohesion of the alliance. The paper looks at Turkeys history, including its accession to the alliance and its historic relationship with NATO. This historic perspective is then contrasted with modern Turkeys identity, which is centered on Turkeys desire to have a more prominent role both within its geographic region as well as within its international organizations. Finally, the paper examines how Turkeys actions have affected its relationship with NATO. It then identifies areas of mutual interest to both NATO and Turkey, and recommends actions to be taken by both parties to strengthen alliance ties.
