Reference Models for Multi-Layer Tissue Structures

Abstract

The aims of this work are i) to establish an online platform to curate, distribute, and reuse data and models of multi-layer tissue structures of musculoskeletal extremities, ii)to collect and disseminate anatomical and mechanical data for building and validating reference models, iii) to build, validate, and disseminate mechanically advanced reference models representative of nonlinear material properties and realistic anatomy, and iv) to build and evaluate fast and mechanically simplified yet visually and haptically realistic surrogate models to be used for surgical simulation. At the time when this report was written, a prototype of a web based data management system was developed, an ultrasound system was instrumented with a force transducer, and in vivo testing has started to acquire the thickness and indentation response of skin, fat, muscle layers of the legs and arms. This comprehensive data will provide the foundations for development of authentic and individualized models for simulation of haptics of musculoskeletal extremities for training.
