Report of the Department of Defense Task Force on Mental Heath

Abstract

Following in the footsteps of several commissions and advisory groups that have considered the state of care in the civilian community (e.g., Presidents New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, Institute of Medicines Improving the Quality of HealthCare for Mental and Substance-Use Conditions), the Task Force identified the salient characteristics of systems capable of delivering excellent prevention, early intervention, and treatment to support psychological health, focusing on the needs of service members and their families. The Task Force was also informed by the findings of the ongoing activities of the Presidential Task Force on Returning Global War On Terror Heroes, the Institutional Review Group Report on Rehabilitative Care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center, the ongoing initiatives of the DOD/Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Mental Health Work Group, and the work of the consolidation of TBI initiatives in the DOD and DVA Work Group.
