A Novel Prosthetic Foot Designed to Maximize Functional Abilities, Health Outcomes and Quality of Life in People with Transtibial Amputation

Abstract

Evidence is needed to guide prosthetic component selection for Service members, Veterans, and civilians with lower limb amputation. A randomized crossover study is conducted to compareoutcomes associated with use of modified running-specific foot (mRSF) compared to atraditional, energy-storing foot (ESF). Key outcomes include walking endurance, metabolicenergy expenditure, step activity, and self-reported mobility, fatigue, activityrestrictions, balance confidence, and satisfaction. Results to-date (n=6 of 24 from thisstudy, n=17 of 30 total) indicate users exhibit modest functional benefits in walking when using a mRSF compared to a ESF. Endurance and metabolic energy are slightly improved, gait is largely unaffected, and step activity is reduced. However, particpiants generally report significant improvements in all health outcomes when using the mRSF. Future efforts will target collecting data from additional participants, and exploring other activities or situations that may be affected by use of different contemporary prosthetic feet.
